Um, what the heck guys? Where did January go?
Between New Year’s Day and MLK and Inaugurations and growing a healthy baby boy (still happening, don’t worry y’all haven’t missed his arrival), January has FLOWN by, whizzing by faster than the weather has been changing here in Texas. Thunderstorms, tornadoes, snow flurries, 80-degree days to trick the azaleas into budding…we’ve had a little bit of everything this past month.
Hopefully, Mother Nature can squeeze out at least one solid snow day for me this month. Just one. That’s all I want. It doesn’t even have to happen on a school day, though bonus points for that. I don’t want a dirty, nasty ice day. There’s no fun in that; I’m talkin’ fluffy, powdery, walkin’ in a winter wonderland kind of day.
I haven’t seen one of those in this area in a while. But who knows? Winter is still young here in Texas.
In the meantime, let’s focus on some of the snacks, sips, reads, and other joyful additions to my life this month. After all, I feel called to spread love and joy on this planet, so one way I can do that is by telling y’all about a handful of things that have brought me joy this past month in hopes that you can reap some of the benefits, too. Sharing is caring, y’all.
Happy February gang! And if you haven’t flipped that calendar page, now’s the time to do it!
1. Greyiege Nail Polish
With winter in full gear, I have a hard time embracing the vampy dark nail colors that many women sport. Rock on with your black nail polish. I've tried it and feel like I'm dressing up as a witch for Halloween. Therefore, I fall back on dark purples, reds, and, my all time favorite, this grey-beige (hints the name) color. In one coat, it usually gets the job done, though touch-ups are a breeze, too.
2. Nikki's Vanilla Cake Batter Coconut Butter
Oh. My. Lanta. This stuff is GOOD! Your favorite, most fabulous nut butter meets the velvety smoothness of coconut. Just like nut butter, though, this is something that packs a caloric and nutrient punch. Not the best thing to mindlessly snack on, but snack is how I love to enjoy it. Smeared on apple or banana slices, melting inside a sweet potato, plopped on oatmeal. or, if you're willpower can handle it, straight from a spoon, this coconut mana will change your life.
3. Holy Kombucha
Ever since I had to forgo alcohol this summer, I've really leaned on kombucha as a way to give me that bubbly, fermenty goodness that the boozy stuff normally provides me. I'd call myself a kombucha conossier at this point, and this is arguably the best I've encountered so far. Bonus points for being locally made, it is refreshing, lightly sweetened, and not cloyingly acidic like many kombuchas can be. I've only found these at Central Market and Sprouts, so non-Texans you've got yet another reason to head over to the Lone Star State.
4. Chocolate Sea Salt RX Bars
When it's snack time, I will ALWAYS be satisfied with anything that's salty+sweet. The problem is a lot of salty-sweet snacks aren't the healthiest of choices, but this one sure is! With only a few simple ingredients, this protein-riffic bar is how I love to satisfy those cravings. At around $2 a bar, these make for perfect on-the-go breakfasts, workout snacks, or travel treats.
5. Cooking For Jeffrey
As a nerd who actually reads cookbooks cover-to-cover, I love for my cookbooks to carry a narrative instead of just being a how-to manual. I absolutely adore Ina and her 'don't sweat it' attitude toward effortless entertaining. While her food is not so Paleo, she is dedicated to keeping this homemade, clean, and as simple as possible. And if you've ever watched her show, you know how cute Ina and her hubby Jeffrey are, therefore a whole book dedicated to the meals she loves cooking for him floats my boat. I, too, have meal preparation as one of my love languages.
6. Indie Christian Spotify Playlist
With some familiar artists like Sean McDonald and Hillsong United and loads of new artists, I have really enjoyed this worship station on spotify to mix-up and refresh my Jesus tunes. To check it out yourself, go to the Genres/Moods section under the Browse tab on Spotify. Select Christian (about three rows down) and this playlist is in the second row. Happy glorifying gang.
7. Say Yes! To Tomatoes Face
As someone who has tried boat loads of products for acne-prone skin, I really love this moisturizer. It's not so thin that I feel like I rubbing scented water on my face but not so thick I can feel my pores clogging immediately, this keeps my combinational skill moisturized without becoming too oily. Just keep in mind there isn't any sunscreen included in it. Protect that skin, y'all.
8. Honey Cinnamon Nut Thins
Since graham crackers aren't exactly gluten-free (though there are gluten-free varieties out there for nearly $5 a box), these slightly sweetened crackers remind me of that nostalgic treat. For those of you who are also on team savory-sweet, these crackers are killer topped with a sharp cheddar or brie. You are welcome.
9. Jesus Always
If you haven't read any of Sarah Young's devotionals, I can't think of a better one to start with. As someone dedicated to a daily morning quiet time, I must be honest that there are some mornings when I have time for a quick devotional blurb, a little scripture, and out the door I go. And these devotionals are perfect for those mornings. I love how this book focuses on how to put Christ's joy forward in our lives.
Alrighty gang! Hopefully February will go as smoothly for me and little McNugget as January. Be well, and Happy Friday EVE!
