Howdy there, you marvelous person, you!
How goes your first Tuesday in January and of this year? For many of you like me, you’re heading back to work after a few days (or weeks…not bragging, teachers 100% deserve it) off.
I must admit, while I love my time off to relax and be with my family and clean my house and organize closets, it feels good to get back to work and back into a routine. I’m sure my students may not all agree, but too bad little friends. That’s life in the big city.
I absolutely love December and the Christmas season, but there’s something refreshing about the new beginnings of January. It feels so gratifying to put away all of the Christmas decorations and get my house looking a little less cluttered and busy. Clean is good.
Before we get too far into January and resolutions and organizing projects, I wanted to share some things that brought me plenty of comfort and joy last month. Granted, some of these things I still enjoy through the new year, but I wanted to share nonetheless.
1. Top Chef Charleston
Padma, Tom, and Gail are back as veteran chefs from past seasons battle it out against a crop of newbies. Not only do I love the fact that they're in the fantastic food city of Charleston, I've really enjoyed getting to see some of my favorite chefs from past seasons step back into the kitchen, too. In short, this show is inspiring. The innovative flavors and food combinations leaves me in awe nearly every episode.
2. Peppermint Mocha Almond Milk Cold Brew
Confession: After trying this shortly after Thanksgiving, I stockpiled 3 more bottles in my refrigerator from Central Market before leaving town for Christmas vacation. With a solid shelf life of a few months, there's no reason I can't enjoy my dairy-free peppermint mochas throughout Valentine's Day. You may call me pathetic, but I call myself resourceful.
3. Gap Maternity
From the basic tee's and sweaters to yoga pants and cotton zip-ups, I've been living in Gap's maternity clothes. They don't fit in, they stretch beautifully, they're easy to wash, and they're downright comfortable. I'm getting to that point in this journey where if I'm not comfortable, then I'm not wearing it. Right now, everything is 40% off, too. Not too shabby...
Set in 1960s New Orleans, this story follows teenager Ibby Bell being raised by her eccentric grandmother and household staff. This book is a fast read, perfect for reading on an airplane. It's not too heavy and is a perfect 'feel good' kind of book.
5. Group Fight/Body Combat
Maybe it's the fact that I'm growing a tiny man inside of me, but I have been really LOVING kickboxing/mixed martial arts fitness classes such as these. Group Fight and Body Combat are nearly identical classes just under two different licensing companies. The Dallas YMCA's offer Body Combat, while Knoxville offers Group Fight. No, you don't actually fight other people. You go through 10 choreographed tracks, with some focusing on one type of martial arts such as karate or muay thai and some combining them. It's a load of fun to kick, chop, and punch for 55 minutes. Plus, they always throw in some conditioning at the end, too.
6. Trader Joe's 85% Organic Dark Chocolate
Paired with dried apricots, dried figs, or even dates, this dark chocolate is a yummy treat for any serious chocolate lover. It's not too sweet, super smooth, and has a slightly fruity flavor to it. Whether you're pregnant or not, this bar (actually you get two bars) will satisfy your sweet tooth without wrecking your blood sugar or New Year's Resolutions.
7. PaleOMG Uncesored Podcast
As a follower of Julie's blog for a few years now, I was stoked to hear she was starting a podcast. On her blog, her writing is very transparent and real, and she's not afraid to get real and brutally honest about health, fitness, food, and life in general. Naturally, that same take-it-or-leave-it attitude comes through in her podcast. Be warned, y'all, she does have a bit of a mouth (hense the uncensored part of her title). Do I still enjoy it? Why yes, I sure do!
Alrighty y'all, that's all for today! Hopefully, this first week of 2017 keeps on treating you like the classy person that you are. If not, well, hang in there. We can't win them all. Be well, and I'll see y'all tomorrow!
