Happy Hump Day, y’all!
So I’m gonna be brief today, cause I’ve got a BIG day ahead of me. After teaching my Queenax class at the Y (come on down, friends! 12:00 p.m.- be there or be square…or I guess round would be the more appropriate shape if you’re not working out…), I’ve gotta zip up to Dallas to pick up my sweet momma from the airport.
Little McNugget and I haven’t seen her since our trek to the motherland (Tennessee) back in August, so it’s time for a reunion.
But when you’re bringing your mom in town to help take care of your kid/help redo your foyer/transition your landscaping to fall (yes, she does it all), you gotta make sure you take care of her and treat her right.
Sure, it was a little painful for me to toss that 12 pack of Diet Coke into my buggy at Wal-Mart this week, but some battles are just not worth fighting. Kinda like Mr. HHT and Waffle House. And Whataburger. And McDonald’s.
To each his own, ya know?
That’s kinda how I approach this whole Paleo thing. I use it as a template, a guide, a foundation for my nutrition and dietary choices, but it’s not the end-all, be-all to what I eat.
With all that said, I wanna show y’all the healthy, Paleoish finds from Wal-Mart this week!
And, as always, if you’re out and about at Wal-Mart and see something worthy of my weekly round-up, snap a pic and tag me @michelle.mcnutt and use the # #healthyhappytexan or #paleowalmart.
And, don’t y’all worry, you better believe a new Trader Joe’s round-up is coming y’all’s way sooooon!
1. Oatmega Chocolate Brownie Protein Bar Box
WHAT: Chocolatey grass-fed whey protein bars
WHERE: Nutrition bar/protein bar section near vitamins
WHY: Grass-fed whey, gluten-free, low sugar, non-gmo, and delicious, I’ve been using these bars as nursing fuel thanks to the gluten-free oats. They’ve quickly become a favorite of Mr. HHT, too. Wal-Mart offers them at under $5 a box. Solid!
2. Vintage Wild Cherry Sparkling Water
WHAT: Cherry seltzer water
WHERE: Mixers section near wine, beer, and soda
WHY: At 66 cents a liter, this is way cheaper than canned sparkling water (sorry LaCroix) yet equally delicious and refreshing. Great as an addition to mocktails or cocktails.
3. Fever-Tree Ginger Beer
WHAT: Natural ginger beer
WHERE: Mixer section near wine, beer, and soda
WHY: While most ginger beers are sugar and calorie BOMBS, this brand manages to offer a flavorful, spicy ginger beer with less of both yet no artificial sweeteners. A must-have staple for one of my favorite fall cocktails, the Moscow Mule.
4. Good Culture Cottage Cheese
WHAT: Organic, grassfed cottage cheese
WHERE: Dairy section near canned biscuits, butter and orange juice
WHY: If you can handle dairy, this cottage cheese is grassfed, organic, low sugar, and crazy high in protein. No funky chemicals or additives. I like to mix in nut butter, pumpkin, and spices for a lazy pumpkin cheesecake-like treat.
5. Frozen Pomegranate Arils
WHAT: Frozen pomegranate seeds
WHERE: Frozen fruit section
WHY: All the antioxidants, fiber, and crunch from the fresh seeds, now available all year round! Try them on top of smoothies, salads, and oatmeal for a burst of tart, juicy yumminess.
