Dear Trader Joes,
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways…cheap wine, dark chocolate-covered everything, affordable plants and flowers, loads of creative paleo and gluten-free snacks and pantry goods…
You make my paleo foodie heart pitter patter with joy every single time I walk through your doors.
Upon landing in Dallas last week, you know I wanted to take advantage of being in proximity to a Trader Joes and reward myself for surviving my first solo, round-trip flying with an infant.
Or at least that was how I justified going and spending $100+ on wine, jams, cheeses, and over absolute necessities for this paleo foodie momma.
After all, I worked hard keeping my boy entertained and silenced on that 2 hour flight. Mama deserves that bottle of Prosecco and organic dark chocolate bar.
Here’s some of the goodies that found their way into my shopping basket while there last week. In typical Trader Joe’s fashion, if you’re interested in any of these, you’d better snag them soon. You never know how long they’ll last on the shelves!
And of course, if you happen to be strolling through Trader Joe's or Wal-Mart or Aldi or another grocery store and see something you think is up my alley, snap a pic, post it on Instagram or Facebook AND tag me! You never know when I'll feature your item!
1. Globe Artichokes
Grilled, steamed, or roasted, these gorgeous vegetables are a fantastic summer appetizer. Hmm...wouldn't that be a fantastic recipe to share with y'all...hint, hint, wink, wink...not only is it an easy app, they're incredibly loaded with fiber.
2. Heirloom Tomatoes
Now that summer is here, tomatoes are in season and actually have flavor! If you can't find local tomatoes, these are a great choice. Super meaty, a little acidic, and a little sweet, these will take your burgers and salads to a whole new level. And when it comes to tomatoes, the uglier they are, the tastier they usually are, too!
3. Goat Cheese Cream Cheese
A little tangier than traditional cream cheese, this spread rocks aside smoked salmon, scrambled eggs, or raw veggies. It could also be swirled into a soup or stew to give it a creamy richness, too. Solid choice for those of y'all who have a hard time with cow dairy.
4. Revive Craft Cola Kombucha
If you're tryin' to kick your soda habit, this drink is for you! Acidic, fizzy, and slightly sweet, this is a much healthier choice than conventional Coke. The entire bottle has only 60 calories and 8 grams of sugar, compared to the real stuff's 140 calories and 39 grams of sugar. On top of that, it's organic and loaded with probiotics.
5. Gluten-Free Toasted Coconut Granola
While I love making my own granola, there are some weeks (like when I've been out of town for a week) that I'm delighted for quality, affordable, store-bought versions like this one. Super crunchy, slightly sweet, and oh-so coconutty, this granola will add a tropical twist to your smoothies, yogurts, salads, and other snacks.
6. Peach Bellini Jam
Helloooooo cocktail-inspired jam! You are destined for greatness on a future cheeseboard. I'm eager to slather this on some brie, sip on some Prosecco, and enjoy life.
7. Seasoned Buffalo Ghee
No, this is not made with buffalo milk or meat...not that there's anything wrong with thinking that...this ghee, which is a clarified butter (not as reactive for those of y'all who have a hard time with dairy), is loaded with buffalo-flavor spices. I foresee this making some insanely good fried eggs; and, while I'm not a chicken wing lady, this would make a killer addition to your buffalo chicken wing game.
8. Sweet Plantain Chips
If you're looking for a healthier chip for scooping up guacamole, tuna salad, or salsa this summer, you've GOT to try these. Made with plantains that are more ripe (thus sweeter), these naturally sweet chips make for some fantastic summer snacking.
9. Raspberry Goat Cheese
Trader Joe's has done it again by providing me with yet another flavored goat cheese. This raspberry goat cheese would add such a flavor bomb a summer berry salad or watermelon salad. Just imagine, a little peppery arugala, tart blackberries, and this tangy goat cheese crumbled in...dang, I'm good.
10. Citrus Avocado Whole Milk Greek Yogurt
Sounds weird, but give it a chance! I promise you this does not taste like guacamole yogurt. If you like your Greek yogurt on the tart side, this is a solid choice for your next breakfast, pre workout, or post workout snack. Healthy fat, protein, and low carb, this yogurt's got it goin' on.
And yes, this picture is NOT in Trader Joe's. It's in my kitchen...deal with it.
11. Goat Cheese Medallions
Have you figured out by now that I'm obsessed with goat cheese? These pint-sized goat cheese rounds would be perfect for picnics, lunch boxes, and on-the-go snacking.
Ready made margaritas sans high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors, and other ingredients that shouldn't be in your cocktail? Yes, please! Mommy needs a margarita sometimes, too. No blending required. Just chill and pour.
13. Frozen Acai Packs
This tart powerhouse has already been blended up for you. Just pour it into your blender and add some greens, almond milk, and whatever else you dig for an easy, peasy breakfast smoothie.
14. Cauliflower Pizza Crust
As someone who has EPICLY failed at making this from scratch (seriously, it was a crumbly, gross mess), I'm delighted to let someone else do the hard work and I buy it ready-to-go for $4.00. I haven't eaten this one yet, but it's waiting in my freezer for me when my next pizza craving hits, which is more often than you'd think!
15. Frozen Mashed Cauliflower
While making mashed cauliflower isn't the hardest side in the world to whip up, some days mommy wants a healthy side in minutes. Though it contains some butter, skim milk, and cream and therefore isn't strictly paleo, it's still a tasty, low-carb, gluten-free side that would please even the meat n' taters people in your life (cough cough, my husband).
Thanks all for this week, friends! I'll be back with more healthy grocery store finds next week. In the meantime, if you see something new, exciting, and healthy that you think would make my paleo foodie heart pitter patter, snap a pic and post it on Facebook or Instagram tagging me in it. You could also just leave me a comment telling me about it or email me at email@example.com.
