With New Year’s Eve just around the corner, many of y’all are researching and planning on whipping up some festive, bubbly cocktails that the night often screams for…normally, I’d be right there with y’all popping those bottles and pourin’ the bubbly.
To me, any day is an appropriate day for a bubbly cocktail. Who says champagne, prosecco, and cava are reserved for weddings and New Year’s Eve?
I say you can pop a bottle any day you want to. I’m all for celebrating life, and I’m pretty sure every day that we wake up and are given the gift of living in this life is worth celebrating. Just sayin…
But, alas, pregnancy….no corks flyin’ through the air over at my house these days.
In case you haven’t figured it out by now, lil’ momma-to-be here does miss her occasional cocktails and glasses of wine. Nonetheless, I’m totally cool with trading 9 months of occasional alcoholic indulgences in order to bring a new little person into this world. Fair trade.
Still, there are some nights, especially when everyone around me is sippin’ on a lil somethin’ somethin’, that I feel a little left out of the party…
That’s where mocktails, such as my Paloma mocktail, comes to the rescue!
Traditionally, a Paloma is one of my favorite alcoholic beverages out there. A little grapefruit soda+tequila+lime juice=wow wow wee wow.
The fizz, the tartness of the grapefruit and lime, the kick of the tequila (mmmm, tequila), and the slight sweetness make this a magical combination of flavors that is refreshing and a little too easy to drink.
Since Patron and I aren’t exactly pals these days, I’ve decided to reinvent my beloved pre-pregnancy cocktail as New Year Eve approaches so I can still sip some bubbly goodness without doing any harm to my growing son and his developing brain.
So how in the world did I manage to make a Paloma pregnancy-friendly? Easy- ginger beer! With plenty of punch and a little spicy kick, this is the closest non-alcoholic mixer I’ve found that is slightly reminiscent of the pow of tequila that I love so much.
Add in a little grapefruit juice, a splash or two of lime seltzer, and a few pomegranate seeds for festive flair, and you’ve got yourself a mocktail that is worthy of a celebration.
Truth be told, you don’t even have to wait until New Year’s Eve to whip this easy mocktail up, nor do you have to be pregnant to enjoy it! In fact, most nights, Mister HHT and I both sip on a mocktail like this with dinner. While we typically swap champagne flutes for stemless wine glasses, there’s no reason you have to wait until a special occasion to enjoy a bubbly cocktail or mocktail.
Could you make this alcoholic? Absolutely! In fact, here in a few months, I’d be interested in trying my Paloma with a splash of tequila in it. I’d just omit an ounce of grapefruit juice and replace that same amount with a shot of tequila instead.
In the meantime, my son and I are sticking with the mocktail. So pop that ginger beer and seltzer, and cheers to whatever celebrations you have ahead of you this week!
Cheers to surviving your Thursday!
Cheers to no cavities at the dentist!
Cheers to finding that lost sock that always seems to disappear after laundry!
Cheers to just being alive!
Whatever you’re toasting, may it be filled with joy and hope that often comes with the new year!
