As a Texan, I’m no stranger to the heat.
It’s hot in the summer.
It’s hot at Christmas.
It’s hot at night.
And, of course, it’s hot throughout 98% of the fall.
On top of all that, Texans love heat on their plates.
So, instead of fighting the natural tendencies of both the local environment and culture, I’m embracing them with my first pumpkin recipe of the season:
A spicy pumpkin protein shake!
Consider the forbidden love story…a rich, spiced mug of Mexican hot chocolate meets an icy, smooth pumpkin milkshake…
Y’all, it’s a match made in heaven.
Sweet. Spicy. Chocolaty. Creamy.
Hopefully, I’ve officially caught your attention…
What’s happens when you combine heat and humidity with a pumpkin-craving paleo foodie?
Today’s recipe, of course!
After nearly ripping open my first (though faaaaar from last) can of pumpkin a few weeks ago with intentions of making my OG pumpkin protein shake, it dawned on me to take my original recipe from last year and play with it.
And play I sure did.
A bit of organic cacao powder, a hint of chili and cayenne (stick with the hint), and this pumpkin shake has been made over into something truly fabulous.
If you’re a pumpkin fan and haven’t tried a pumpkin shake yet, please make today that day!
And if you’re not a fan of spicy, just omit the cayenne for a still delicious breakfast, snack, or even dinner. Trust me, I’ve had those days when dinner=whatever gets the most nutrients into my body with the least amount of time and effort.
And this is one of those bang for your buck recipes.
Here’s some of the nutrition highlights:
All that in one protein-packed shake!
Wanna up the carbs? Add in a little frozen banana to sweeten it.
Wanna up the fat? Swap the almond milk for coconut milk.
I usually add carb and fat with my toppings. Berries, figs, coconut chips, pecans, gluten-free granola…whatever lights your fire.
Ya know, this recipe is pretty much me personified in shake form…it’s a lil sweet but still packs a punch if you’re not careful.
Small but mighty.
