In my family, we’re pie people.
Thanksgiving has a two-pie minimum.
My dad’s birthday demands a butterscotch or Boston crème pie.
My brothers tend to prefer peach or berry birthday pies.
My mom gravitates toward citrus celebratory pies such as lemon or key lime.
And my husband, Mr. HHT, who works for his family’s bakery, can’t make up his mind between chocolate, pecan, or, shocker, chocolate pecan.
It’s like pie practically runs in my veins.
But y’all know just as well as I do that pie isn’t exactly part of a balanced diet. It can be loaded with sugar, fat, gluten, artificial flavors and colors, as well as other substances we don’t need to be regularly consuming.
But hey- you’re the kinda person that can eat pie frequently and still look and perform at a level that pleases you, then power to you.
I’m not one of those fortunate few. And chances are you aren’t, either.
So what are we supposed to do when the craving for pie strikes us on a regular basis?
Deny ourselves the pleasure of pie?
Well that’s no fun, huh?
Instead, I’ve captured all of the creamy, zesty, tart flavor of one of my favorite pies- key lime- and put a proteinriffic spin on it.
Today, let’s whip up a batch of key lime pie protein shakes!
For the love of limes…
There’s just somethin about the brightness of lime that I cannot get enough of, in both savory and sweet scenarios.
I love it in a sauce with my Asian meatballs and zoodles.
I like it zested in my key lime energy bites and coconut lime energy bites, too.
I dig it in my coconut lime chia pudding as well.
And of course, I adore key lime pie.
In fact, last summer I shared with y’all my His and Her recipe for it, revealing Mr. HHT’s favorite recipe that is 0% paleo (but still daggum fabulous) as well as my version that is 100% paleo and still stinkin stellar.
But when the mood strikes me for key lime pie, I don’t really care to go through the steps of making an entire pie just for myself.
Eating an entire pie by myself would be impressive and merit some street cred, though it wouldn’t be a step in the direction I’m trying to take my body these days.
That’s why I concocted this key lime pie shake.
Just like the real deal, this shake is super creamy, both tart and sweet, and loaded with lime juice and zest. The main difference is this shake delivers a nutritional punch, whereas the pie delivers a sugar rush and a bloating belly.
And where as many key lime pies add green food coloring, this shake gets it emerald hue from frozen zucchini and spinach.
So between the veggies and coconut milk and protein powder, this shake delivers loads of healthy fats, oodles of vitamins, and protein.
Depending on your protein powder, you may want to add a drizzle of honey or toss in a few dates for natural sweetness.
And a secret ingredient I discovered whilst experimenting is the addition of a little coconut milk lime yogurt, like So Delicious brand, or a little avocado if you can’t find the yogurt or just don’t want to mess with it. Either one will add a creaminess and thickness . DO NOT use lime Greek yogurt. I tried that and it kinda curdled with the lime juice. Ick.
This recipe will make two “I’m kinda hungry” servings or one “I’m flippin starving” serving. For me, I tend to fall into the latter category more often than not.
Feel free to serve your shake in a cup rimmed with shredded coconut or gluten-free graham crackers OR in a bowl topped with berries, granola, banana slices, or whatever strikes your fancy.
And if the craving for key lime pie strikes again and you have enough people around to assist you, give my Paleo version a whirl. You won’t be disappointed.
