HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY, Y’ALL!!!!!
I’m going to cut to the chase here because I’m so excited to share today’s summertastic recipe with y’all.
In case you’ve been living under a rock or you don’t watch the Today show (not sure we can be friends if you don’t…), rosé is THE drink of summer 2017.
Move over minty mojitos, margaritas, and Moscow mules (though I find each of you delightful in certain times and places), because pink wine is here and it is HOT (not temperature-wise, of course…it’s a frozen concoction of greatness).
But what’s really taking this strawberry-hued sip to the next level is freezing it, thus turning your rosé into FROSÉ!!!!
Sure, you can go to a swanky cocktail lounge or bar and dish out $5-10 for ONE glass or spend about $5 for an entire batch of it.
Since I like having more money in my pocket AND more wine in my glass, I know what choice I would make in this situation…
AND, with today being the 4th of July, I can’t think of a more refreshing, sophisticated, festively colorful concoction to serve your guests at your backyard barbeque or seaside soirée.
Today, my friends, I bring you FROSÉ!!
Y’all, I need to offer an apology. A sincere, heartfelt apology from the bottom of my heart.
I am judgmental.
Call me hypocrite. Call me charlatan. Call me Judgy McJudgerson.
As of last summer, I thought pink wine was tacky. I assumed anyone sipping pink wine must be lacking sophistication and refinement with their wine choices…I’m mean come on! It’s PINK WINE. How ridiculous.
That was until my mom put a glass of Acrobat rosé in front of me last July.
Chris, I know exactly how you felt…
I made a HUGE mistake.
To all y’all who find pleasure in pink wine, I’m sorry for my mental belittlement of your boozy choices.
In fact, I now stand proudly beside you, praising you for knowing better than me, for showing me a thing of two, for fearlessly trailblazing the rosy roadway ahead of me.
Like I teach my third graders, when you make a mistake, you need to fix it.
So to all you pink wine drinkers, I bring you a recipe that properly places our pink wine on a pedestal, celebrating its greatness and glory without an ounce of shame.
Friends, this recipe is super simple.
I could probably hire some of my third grade students who live in my neighborhood to come over and whip it up for me…though I fear that may be tiptoeing into the land of inappropriate and illegal.
Sigh, I guess I’ll just do it myself…
How easy is this? 4 steps is pretty easy.
1- SEVERAL HOURS/NIGHT BEFORE YOU WANT TO GET YO COCKTAIL ON- Freeze the Rosé- pour bottle of rosé into gallon-sized baggie, zip him up, snuggle him into a baking dish in case he’s a tad leaky, and tuck him into your freezer to form those frosty crystals. Because it’s alcohol, it won’t freeze completely. But you will get ice crystals within 4-8 hours.
2- A FEW HOURS BEFORE YOU WANT TO GET YO COCKTAIL ON- Make the simple syrup (aka flavored sugary water). In a medium sauce pan, toss in one part water to two parts coconut sugar (or whatever sweetener you like/have in your pantry). Boil the mixture until it starts to thicken into…well, a syrup, which takes about 3-5 minutes. I used 1 cup water to 2 cup coconut syrup.
3- A FEW MINUTES BEFORE YOU WANT TO GET YO COCKTAIL ON- Blend it up- If you’re serving a crowd, pour the entire contents of your boozy baggie, a ¼ to ½ cup of your simple syrup (depending on how sweet you like it), a few handfuls of fresh basil or mint or both, and 1 cup of frozen berries and watermelon in your blender.
4- A FEW SECONDS BEFORE YOU WANT TO GET YO COCKTAIL ON- Rim those glasses- To make it look even more fancy AND add a flavorful touch, rub a cut lime around the rim of each glass. Then, on a small plate, pour a few tablespoons of salt and sugar. I used pink Himalayan salt and coconut sugar, but kosher salt and turbinado sugar would work, too. You could skip this step altogether, but I think it takes the drink to a new level.
Could you make this kid-friendly and non-alcoholic? ABSOLUTELY! Replace the bottle of wine with a few cans of frozen orange juice, lemonade, or limeade concentrate for an equally delicious and refreshing sip for the whole family!
Friends, family, and pink-wine enthusiasts, this is, by far, one of my favorite cocktails to this day. Bold statement, I know.
Bold, but true.
I could ramble on and on about the greatness of this drink, of we could cut to the chase and get our drank on.
Cheers to summer vacation!
Cheers to 4th of July!
Cheers to America!
Cheers to making the bed today!
Whatever you want to raise a glass to, I’m delighted to provide you with a flavorful, festive, fruity sip that is certainly worthy of a celebration all summer long! Plus, it has fruit in it, so it's healthy. Okay, healthish...
